Every music lover in Sydney has fond memories of the Hordern. From hosting the first Big Day Out back in ’92 to pretty much every huge international act gracing it’s stage since, the venue has endured as an epicenter for culture in the city.
Unfortunately yet again, baby-boomers have seen the dollar sign potential in transforming a live music venue into another big business HQ that’ll continue to sap the city of its colour and sound.
With the Hordern’s lease set to expire in 2021, the Sydney Swans and the Sydney Roosters are apparently looking towards transforming the Horden for their new base of operations. The two teams already operate in and amongst the Entertainment Quarter so it’d, unfortunately, be a no-brainer for them to move in.
Check out A$AP Rocky’s incredible Sydney performance from back in 2013:
As originally reported by the Daily Telegraph, a “huge scale project” project is set to take over the Entertainment Quater featuring new “Instagrammable food outlets” (wow, how #relatable), elite sports facilities, offices and a hotel. Add all the avo and F45 you want, just leave our Horden alone, please.
This potential transformation of the iconic live music venue is a culmination of every problem currently plaguing Sydney – the powers in charge place little value on culture and what it adds to the city. Sydney’s selection of live of music venues is slowly slimming, let’s not lose another icon.
