Mac Miller may be gone but his music lives on forever.
Last September, the rapper tragically passed only at the age of 26 due to an accidental overdose. Later on in November, Spotify posthumously released a Singles recording session. Now the world is blessed with another new recording from the Pittsburgh rapper thanks to an online leak of his previously unreleased song: Benji the Dog.
Mac’s death was especially heartbreaking for the music industry and for fans, as it came one month after the release of his final project, Swimming. It was a self-reflection after his highly publicised breakup with Ariana Grande, leading to getting charged with a DUI. The album was about his heartbreak, his mental health, and finally trying to get his shit together.
Benji the Dog samples David Schwimmer saying “He’s always gonna be the juice” when he starred as the late Robert Kardashian in The People vs OJ Simpson: American Crime Story (2016).
The song discusses Mac’s struggles with addiction, as well as his mother’s. Similar to the theme of the tracks of Swimming, Mac talks about how he doesn’t have advice to anyone else who’s struggling. His self awareness of his drug addiction is definitely a massive step up from his college-rap Blue Slide Park days.
To ensure that a tragedy like Mac’s death is prevented, the Mac Miller Legacy Fund was recently set up by MusiCares to “help music people aged 27 and under who are struggling with substance abuse”. The Fund was created thanks to the rapper’s family donating $50 000 to MusiCares, and it was announced at MusiCares’ annual Concert for Recovery by Vince Staples.
