Last time the UK was given the responsibility of a serious competition, they named a ship Boaty McBoatface. Dezeen hasn’t learnt from that situation and has launched an unofficial comp to design a new passport for citizens of the post-Brexit United Kingdom.
While creatives primarily voted ‘stay’ in the referendum regarding the EU, the competition aims to create a positive for the nation that is representative of all citizens.
It’s a cool concept, which we may have to borrow should ‘Straya ever decide to part from our heritage and Queen Lizzy (and her B’day holiday).
Trained designers, students and non designers internationally and locally may apply, with entries in the running for. However, first prize is no easy feat, with practicality, execution and justification for design as judgement criteria. After all, it is a symbol for national identity, pride and selfhood — something that is definitely symbolised through Boaty McBoatface.
Some are campaigning for the return of the deep blue passport, before Britain joined the EU.
We have tried to contact Deezen to suggest some guidelines they should apply, but for some reason they aren’t replying. So we seek to influence you through here, almost as Boaty McBoatface happened. We suggest the designs include following British icons (bonus points if you can include all):
- Tea & Biscuits
- James Bond
- Cheese Rolling
- Harry Potter
- A person with bad teeth
- Depiction of the travesty of what was the British Bunnings ad.
While it’s not an ‘official’ competition, Deezen will present the chosen design to the Home Office.
Get arty.
