Sailor Moon is announced to have two brand new movies coming out in 2020. Titled Sailor Moon Eternal, this will be the first theatrical release since 1995. The new installation of the series will be a two-parter linking to the original 90’s show.
The first teaser trailer has already been released, with our favourite anime girl gang looking slightly different from before, although still giving us mad nostalgia.
If you’re a fan of ‘magical girl’ anime, you’ll know Sailor Moon is the OG. Created in the early 90s by Naoko Takeuchi, the series revolutionised the trope of teenage anime girls who transform into guardians of love and justice. At the centre of the series is Usagi Tsukino, who is also the titular Sailor Moon. She protects the universe from the forces of evil with her colourful team, named after all the planets in our solar system.
Takeuchi will be overseeing the project; and Kazuko Tadano, who worked on the original character designs, will be part of the team for both Sailor Moon Eternal movies. Also featured in the team are Chiaki Don as director, returning from the third season of the series; and Kazuyuki Fudeyasu (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) will be on board as scriptwriter.
The new movies will adapt the Dead Moon arc of the manga, which was first seen in the Sailor Moon SuperS part of the original anime. The voice cast from Sailor Moon Crystal is confirmed to be returning.
Exact dates have yet to be set, however producers have promised both movies will premiere in Japanese theatres in 2020. Fingers crossed they’ll be available to us soon shortly after.
