The Art Gallery of New South Wales will be hosting an exhibition titled Japan Supernatural, running from November 2019 – March 2020. The multi-sensory exhibition will center on a large scale installation of painting and sculpture by Takashi Murakami, which we can’t wait to feast our eyes on.

Takashi’s artworks are influenced by his obsession with the Japanese subculture of otaku, a group of fanatical geeks obsessed with the fantasy worlds depicted in anime and manga. This is seen through his use of psychedelic colours and character motifs throughout his oeuvre, bridging the gap between high art and popular Japanese culture.
Murakami has been the face of Japanese postmodern art for over a decade and has gained mainstream recognition through his album artworks and clothing collaborations with Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Pharrell, Billie Eilish, Off-White and many more.

The Japan Supernatural exhibition will feature extensive masterworks from worldwide collections, featuring large scale sculptures, animation, cinema and woodblock prints from both contemporary and ancient Japanese artists.

Japan Supernatural is set to open at the Art Gallery of NSW in November 2019 as part of the Sydney International Art Series. The full list of artworks will be announced in the coming months.
