As we’re sure you’ve all seen by now, a video of a man shouting racist slurs has circulated the internet this week indulging our news feeds with the saddening reality that in 2017, ignorant barbarians still exist.

However, the video did feature one extremely redeeming quality. A hero, rightfully so, threw a cup of hot soup on the man, serving him with the appropriate level of humiliation he deserves.

That hero was none other than New York rapper, Princess Nokia.

2017 is proving a fruitful year for women in hip hop and RnB. After a long period of dismissal and side stepping, girls are finally gaining the support and recognition they deserve – we’re not at a point of entire equality within music entirely yet, but, we’re slowly but surely getting there. Cardi B, SZA and Khelani have all had straight fire runs this year, this will surely inspire a slew of young gun talent to push through into the upper echelon ranks.

Princess Nokia (her real name being Destiny Frasqueri) has embedded this renegade spirit wholly within her music. Back in September she released the excellent 1992 Deluxe mixtape – the tape features a compelling combination of riveting trap beats, afro-punk inspired textures and scathing lyrical takedowns of misogyny, racism and classism in NYC. It’s a an absolute must listen, that at times becomes extremely confronting in how deeply intimate it gets.

Here are 5 of her essential bangers to get acquainted with:

BRUJAS

GOTH KID

TOMBOY

MINE

G.O.A.T

She’ll be hitting up Origin NYE fest in Perth and Field Day so get studying on these tracks to make sure you can keep up with her ~energy~.
