With odds around 1 in 176,000,000, we can pretty much toss the dream of winning the lottery out the window. Being killed by flesh-eating bacteria, a literal 1 in 1 million chance, is more likely to happen then pulling out the winning numbers. Also winning an Olympic gold medal (1 in 662,000), dating a millionaire (1 in 215)  and  visiting the ER for a pogo stick related injury (1 in 115,300).

Though that million dollar dream did come true today when a lucky bloke from Newcastle, NSW pulled out a year old lottery ticket from his Aldi bag filled with empty beer cases — striking up the winning numbers and a whole lot of $$$.

“I line the bottom of my reusable Aldi shopping bags with old beer cartons to give them some strength,The ticket was hidden in underneath it and I didn’t know it was there.”

The grandad admitted “a bit stupid” for forgetting about the $1,020,496 ticket for 414 days. We can only feel 1% of the pure joy he would have experience, I mean I still get excited when I find a $5 note in my pocket.

The now-millionaire plans to put the money to good use by helping his kids out with house repayments and his grandkids with their education.
