For every blow to Sydney culture we seem to endure, there are always rays of hope that glimmer through, reminding us that the city entirely won’t become the dull nanny state feared. Newtown is a total cultural epicenter in Sydney. From epic eateries to iconic venues, the suburb is a total hub for creatives that needs constant nurturing.

On October 24, the council voted to investigate the legalization of longer trading hours, ‘a reduction in red tape and legal music and arts events’ in ‘non-traditional spaces, such as shop fronts, restaurants, and cafes’ according to this official report.

“King Street is the ideal environment to allow cafes, restaurants, and retail shops to host grassroots music and theatre to small audiences. I want to ensure that common sense prevails over red tape and bureaucracy and create one level playing field for all businesses to unite King Street” said Mayor Darcy Byrne.

The council is set to collaborate with the Newtown Precinct Business Association to establish a new set of regulations for King Street. Cheers to longer and louder nights ahead, Newwy.
